We can change our lives and the lives of those around us by changing
our attitudes.
Attitude is the attribute that influences almost every action we might
undertake. No matter how wealthy we are, how well educated, how successful,
whatever our station in life, we will finally be judged on the human
element of attitude that we project.
It is the attitude of the individual to life and to others that will
determine the attitude of life to the individual. We shape our own
lives. We have the choice of choosing the attitude that will make
a success of our lives.
Attitude is a powerful reflection of spirit. Look at yourself. Are you happy? Be honest. The environment you find around yourself is a mirror of your attitude. If you have a problem then you should start asking questions. Those around you will change only when you change for them. If you feel that fortune does not favour you, it might be best to consider your own attitude (see persistence).
Treat those around you as would like them to treat you. Everyone needs recognition, gratitude and a kind word. Those people with the best attitudes always rise above the rest. My experience is that the attitude you start with often has a marked influence upon the final outcome of any venture. Good attitudes are often the introduction to an opportunity and also the final arbiter to success.
The greatest desire of human beings is to be respected and appreciated. In my own life I have worked with simple uneducated labourers who were at times accused of indolence and lack of commitment. It has been my privilege to see their response when I acknowledged them for good work, allowed them responsibility and respected them as individuals. Within a short period these same people were showing initiative, were making decisions and setting their own goals. A completely unmotivated attitude was replaced by a commitment to a creative work ethic and changes of attitude.
Your own commitment to attitude will come when your faith and trust in a cause or a person is shattered by dishonesty or fraud. If you allow this to destroy your attitude to others, you risk becoming cynical of everyone and of life in general. You project an attitude of distrust to your friends and associates. You lose faith in your judgement and it's a short step to distrusting yourself! This starts a non-virtuous cycle and you soon become the victim of your own mistrust.
The excellent book, "How to think like a Millionaire" by Charles.A. Poissant analyzes the lives of ten successful millionaires. The message is clear. If you want to be a millionaire then you had better think like millionaire. If you want to succeed in human interactions then you had better learn that attitude is the beginning and the end. Others want to be treated as you would like to be treated. I recommend that you read this book. There is a common thread in the story of these financially successful people. Persistence in everything they undertook. Complete commitment to what they had set out to achieve. In the case of every one the common theme is that of people.
People and relationships were the common denominator that built their
empires and that determined their destiny. They had a thorough understanding
of human nature.
