The failure to achieve a desired result is in many instances caused
by the lack of a clear goal. There must be a palpable driven desire
to achieve that goal. Action must be tempered with the pragmatism
and ability to accept alternative solutions in order to achieve the
main desire. Persistence to achieve a set goal is the most powerful
driver.
Abraham Lincoln lost 18 elections before he achieved his goal as president
of the USA. The goal must become an obsession as the time to reach
that goal will be proportional to the intensity of the desire to reach
it (see the magic of goals).
In my own experience two instances stand out. As a teenager, I was
driven by this complete desire to own and race a hydroplane. After
building the craft I recall turning up at the race venue with the
boat and no motor because there was no money left. I was so completely
obsessed in getting into that race that the lack of the motor seemed
irrelevant. The competitors thought I was a trifle challenged but
something wonderful happened. One competitor offered me an old motor
and I was able to race. I won the race! This is an example of an uncanny
faith that worked in achieving a goal.
Another example of the subconscious achievement of setting a goal also happened in my dairy farming career. I had laid out a 10 year comprehensive development plan of fencing and pastures on the back of a wall calendar which I subsequently forgot and never referred to again. Ten years later when moving office I discovered the plan. I was astonished to discover that all my subsequent developments had been precisely as I had planned in spite of the fact that I had forgotten about the plan and had never referred to it again - an example of the subliminal power of the mind to achieve goals.
Attitude is the controlling link between all the other attributes that will decide all your achievements in life. Attitude is the catalyst that links your passion to drive, where the enthusiasm you generate toward the achievement of your goals starts to become a reality. Your faith and excitement energizes others around you who also start believing in your goals and so assist in achieving the reality. It is vital that when you set goals that you start with the right attitude.
Lack of capital is not an impediment in setting an eventual goal.
Intellect or education is not a handicap. Instinct and intuition is
more important. Experience in your failures is of priceless value
- more valuable than education. To set goals, common sense and street
wisdom are more valuable than a degree. Set a goal that you have explicit
faith in achieving and you will achieve it. Once your goal is set
you must take action immediately. Fortune favours the brave. In whatever
you do the first step is the most difficult but the most vital to
results. Write down your goal and your deadlines.
No goals were ever achieved that were never set. No destination was
ever reached where the traveller never set out on the journey.
Live in a world of reality. Change the things you can and accept the
things that you cannot change. Never fight battles that you cannot
win. Do not envy others what they have and that you have so little
of. Rather ask yourself what you can do with what you have. If you
can be comfortable with yourself and have confidence in your judgement
the world is alive with excitement and possibilities.
"Do all you can with what you have, in the time you have,
in the place you are."
- Nkosi Johnson (1989-2001), young South African AIDS activist,
to Jim Wooten (author of We are all the same)
